Sustainability

Thinking Sustainably

The growth and development of our communities significantly influence our natural environment. The manufacturing, design, construction, and operation of buildings, where we reside and conduct business, play a vital role in the utilization of numerous natural resources. This interconnected relationship highlights the importance of sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact.

Designing Sustainably

Green building, or sustainable design, is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings and their sites use energy, water, and materials, and of reducing impacts on human health and the environment for the entire lifecycle of a building. Green-building concepts extend beyond the walls of buildings and include site planning, community and land-use planning issues as well.

Building Sustainably

Puerto Rico faces natural hazards like hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, hence having a strong, safe structure is mandatory.

However there are still many features that may be included in the design to make the architecture green.

Living Sustainably

Green Architecture is the theory, science, and style of buildings designed and constructed in accordance with environmentally friendly principles:

  • Ventilation systems designed for efficient cooling (cross ventilation)

  • Energy-efficient lighting and appliances

  • Landscaping with native vegetation and planned to maximize passive solar energy

  • Alternative renewable energy power sources such as solar power or wind power

  • Locally-obtained wood and stone, eliminating long-haul transportation

  • Use of recycled materials

  • Efficient use of space

  • Optimal location on the land, maximizing sunlight, winds, and natural sheltering

  • Rainwater harvesting and gray water reuse
